Abstract

Consumers are increasingly taking the environmental impact of their food choices into consideration. Amid this growing awareness, avocados have attracted substantial media scrutiny for their water use, often overlooking the water scarcity context of their production regions. International trade in avocados and other water-intensive crops introduces additional sustainability considerations related to how water resources are allocated across producing and consuming regions. We analyse whether media reports frame the water use of avocados in a differentiated manner and how it is contextualized. We then project this against a water-stress-adjusted metric weighting the environmental impact of the avocado and comparable substitute crops relative to water stress conditions in the production regions. Our findings reveal that media reports on avocados’ virtual water footprint (WF) lack nuance, particularly when compared to those of similarly water‐intensive substitute crops under comparable stress levels. Yet media criticism of these alternatives is substantially less prevalent. Unsustainable agricultural water use in water‐stressed regions is a concern across all water-demanding agricultural commodities and does not pertain singularly to avocados. A broader perspective on agricultural WFs is therefore essential for informing sustainable consumption and trade policies.
